HISTORY OF İZMİR

With its history dating back 8,500 years, İzmir has hosted many great civilizations such as the Hittites, Romans, Byzantines and Ottomans. İzmir, which is a port city, is rich in historical buildings and artifacts. It has many treasures such as the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, and the House of the Virgin Mary. İzmir, which has been under the auspices of the Ottoman Empire for about 500 years, has served as the gate of the state to the outside with its port throughout history. The ancient İzmir Port hosted traders from all over the world. Thus, the city gained a multi-identity structure where different cultures intersect and exchange ideas, and turned into an open-air museum. Ephesus Ancient City, Allianoi Ancient City, Aya Fotini Church, Kemeraltı Bazaar and Historical Elevator are among the most important works that reflect the historical texture of İzmir today.
